Ercole Vellone

Associate Professor

University of Rome Tor Vergata

Dr. Ercole Vellone is Associate Professor of Nursing Science at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, Italy.

Dr. Vellone’s main national and international contribution is in self-care research in heart failure and in other chronic conditions. Dr. Vellone developed the Caregiver Contribution to Self-Care of Heart Failure Index, which is used in 12 countries to measure the extent to which informal caregivers help HF patients in their self-care processes. Thanks to this instrument, investigators around the world have expanded their understanding of self-care as a phenomenon in which caregivers have a central role. Data collected with this instrument allowed Dr. Vellone to develop the Situation-Specific Theory of Caregiver Contributions to Heart Failure Self-Care, which has the potential to impact future studies and clinical practice with caregivers. Dr. Vellone’s research program has greatly influenced the doctoral Program in Nursing Science and Public Health at the University of Rome Tor Vergata, with 16 students who obtained their PhD with a dissertation on self-care.

Thanks to his research on self-care, Dr. Vellone has became Fellow of the European Society of Cardiology and a Science Committee Member of the Association of Cardiovascular Nursing and Allied Professions. From 2017 Dr. Vellone is Associate Director of the International Center for Self-Care Research and Executive Board Member of the Italian Association of Heart Failure Patients.

Dr. Vellone received his Nursing Diploma from the Hospital of Cassino, his Master in Nursing Science from the Sapienza University in Rome and his PhD from the University or Rome Tor Vergata.
