Dennis Spence


Chief Research Officer

National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists

Dennis Spence is the Chief Research Officer at the National Board of Certification and Recertification for Nurse Anesthetists. He is an Adjunct Faculty in the Texas Wesleyan University DNAP, Adjunct Associate Professor at the Uniformed Services University of the Health Sciences Graduate School of Nursing, and a staff CRNA Baylor, Scott and White Medical Center in Temple, TX. Dr. Spence retired in September 2020 as a Captain from the United States Navy.

An experienced nurse scientist, academician, and clinician, Dr. Spence has held positions as Senior Nurse Executive, Naval Hospital Guantanamo Bay; Regional Director for Nursing Research, Phase II Research Director for the Navy Nurse Corps Anesthesia Program and Institutional Review Board Chair at Naval Medical Center San Diego. He is a former member of the Board of Directors for the NBCRNA and member of the TriService Nursing Research Program Advisory Council. An active clinician, Dr. Spence has served as a Nurse Anesthetist in a variety of military and humanitarian settings around the world. He served as the Assistant Director for Surgical Services and Staff Nurse Anesthetist on the USNS MERCY during Pacific Partnership 2016. Dr. Spence has expertise in teaching Applied Biostatistics, Evidence-based Practice, and Nurse Anesthesia. His research interests include credentialing research, obstructive sleep apnea, and patient safety.

Dr. Spence completed his BSN from the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio in 1994, his MS from Georgetown University in 2001, and PhD from Rush University Graduate School of Nursing in 2008.
