Sonja’s internationally recognized work in palliative care and doctoral education in nursing has resulted in successful long-term collaborations in Ireland, Australia, Slovenia, UK, USA and China. She is an experienced clinical academic with nearly thirty years’ experience in nursing and palliative care practice, education and research. She serves on a number of editorial boards, policy committees, funding panels and development groups in these areas. Sonja has published widely in academic and professional journals with over 150 research outputs and publications and has a successful history of grant acquisition, securing over 5 million US dollars. Sonja is a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland and a Fellow Royal College of Nursing UK, a UK Florence Nightingale Leadership Scholar and member of the research advisory committee for the Council of Deans for Health, UK. Professor Mcilfatrick is an internationally recognized leader in nursing and palliative care research and has been invited to deliver presentations at key national and international events. She is one of only two nurses, an elected to the Board of Directors of the European Association of Palliative Care. She holds Visiting Professor appointments at the University of Maribor, Slovenia; University of Chiba, Japan and University of Technology, Sydney. Sonja has contributed to global leadership in doctoral education in nursing as the first non US President of the International Network for Doctoral Education in Nursing (INDEN). In this role she has achieved recognition in the USA, far east and southern hemisphere.
