Mary Anne Hilliard is Executive Vice President and General Counsel at Children’s National Hospital, a U.S. News and World Report Top Ten Pediatric Hospital, in Washington DC.
A renowned global advocate in healthcare risk management, Ms. Hilliard contributed to the transformation of the healthcare practice setting and the insurance industry through breakthrough approaches to patient safety. As president of American Society of Healthcare Risk Management (ASHRM), Mary Anne led a national harm-reduction campaign named “Journey to Zero.” She also led the development of the first national pediatric patient harm database which was a precursor to and informed Congressional legislation on the Federal Patient Safety Act. As appointed member of the National Advisory Council on Nurse Education and Practice (NACNEP), Mary Anne contributed to Congressional reports which led to funding for improvements in nursing practice
Her combined nursing and legal backgrounds have empowered her to act on opportunities to advance safety, specifically those related to disclosure, measurement and human factors practice. She lectures domestically and globally about the power that one person has to prevent mistakes. In the early 2000’s, Ms. Hilliard developed a replicable Patient Safety Program that was endorsed by virtually all major malpractice insurance carriers and led to improvements in nursing practice nationally and internationally.
Ms. Hilliard received her nursing degree from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC and her law degree from the Columbus School of Law, Catholic University of America.
