Stephen A. Ferrara is Associate Dean of Clinical Affairs and Associate Professor at Columbia University School of Nursing. Additionally, he is executive director of the Nurse Practitioner Association New York State and interim executive director at Jonas Nursing and Veterans Healthcare. He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Doctoral Nursing Practice. He has been named as a Distinguished Practitioner by the National Academies of Practice and a Fellow of the New York Academy of Medicine and the American Association of Nurse Practitioners.
Dr. Ferrara’s career includes multi-faceted positions combining clinical practice, research, health policy, board governance and executive-level leadership. His work has primarily focused on health policy activism to advocate for barrier-free NP practice. He demonstrated how arbitrary state practice barriers limited access and utilization of NPs in NY State leading to multiple consecutive statutory victories over the last six years. He directly applied the improved practice landscape into the primary care NP faculty practice at Columbia Nursing as Associate Dean and Associate Professor, where clinicians practice to the full extent of state laws and regulations including the authority to sign do not resuscitate orders and death certificates. An early and avid user of social media, Dr. Ferrara utilizes these platforms for advocacy and public health messaging. As a result, he has appeared across multiple local, regional and national media outlets representing nurses on issues such as vaccinations and increasing access to healthcare.
Dr. Ferrara received his BS, BSN, MS, and DNP from Pace University in New York.
