Petra Brysiewicz is a Professor of Nursing in the School of Nursing & Public Health, University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and Honorary Professor in the Division of Emergency Medicine, Department of Surgery, Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Cape Town, South Africa.
Dr. Brysiewicz has devoted over two decades of her career to improving the care of trauma/emergency patients and their families via research, clinical practice, policy and education. Recognizing the huge lack of emergency services and nurses trained in emergency care, she has worked toward addressing this need via her education and research activities, as well as by mentoring and training other students from across the continent of Africa as researchers and how to be "thinking clinicians". She is extensively involved in graduate research supervision and plays a significant role in professional societies for emergency care in South Africa and Africa. She has partnered with other countries to create significant resources for emergency nurses.
As the communicating PI for Fogarty International Center of the National Institutes of Health (USA) D43 Grant, her efforts are focused on inter-professional mentoring and research leadership development for young health researchers. Dr. Brysiewicz is the editor-in-chief for the International Emergency Nursing journal and also sits on several other editorial boards.
Dr. Brysiewicz received a BSocSc from University of Natal, B Arts from University of South Africa, MN from University of Natal and PhD from University of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa.
