Toby Bressler, PhD, RN, OCN is the Senior Director of Nursing for Oncology and Clinical Quality for the Mount Sinai Health System, faculty at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, and a Fellow in the New York Academy of Medicine. She previously served as a Jonas Policy Scholar with the Academy.
A transformational leader, the impact of Dr. Bressler’s contributions cross a nexus of community, clinical, and educational settings, helping to advance global understanding and policy formation. She pioneered the inclusion of Orthodox Jews within contemporary healthcare working with Rabbis and healthcare professionals alike in strengthening community and organizational health literacy. Under her aegis, the Orthodox Jewish Nurses Association now engages thousands of nurses globally and is ANA’s first recognized faith-based organizational affiliate.
As the Senior Director of Oncology Nursing, Dr. Bressler has significantly contributed to advancing cancer care for women from diverse faith based minorities. Culturally congruent nursing care initiatives including an APN-led survivorship program and a multilingual patient portal, resulting in excellent care, patient engagement and quality metrics. These initiatives are now being replicated at other sites; the National Commission on Cancer awarded its highest commendation for its excellence in nursing care delivery.
Melding her faith with nursing science and social justice, Dr. Bressler’s advocacy has improved health-equity for at-risk communities. Her scholarship and research address health promotion in faith-based minorities, cancer care and advancing palliative care. The findings of her highly specialized knowledge has been disseminated in refereed publications spanning 20 countries and across 5 continents.
